“Not really,” said Bae. “What about you?”

“Not really,” admitted Hung. “I’m a lover, not a fighter. But I’m not telling anyone else that. If the captain says red is green, who am I to argue with him? I’d like to live through this ordeal. ”

“You will,” said Lilly.

Hung looked toward lilly, a big smile on his face. “Thank you,” he said. He

paused. “I bet it’s been four or five months since I last saw you, Lilly. You’ve sure grown.”

Lilly giggled, but said nothing more.

“Her blessing means a lot,” noted Bae. “Trust me.”

“I wouldn’t doubt it,” said Hung. “I think we’re going to need all the help

we can get. After all, we’re going up against the entire world, right?”

“I hope not,” said Bae.

All too soon they reached the crossroads. It was busier here than usual, and

they had to make a detour to get there. A large crew of men had started working on the paving project. Soon the road that led by the old mill would be a paved one.

A number of other young men from Bae’s class were waiting here as well, waiting for the bus.

“Into the valley of death rode the 23,” said Hung.

“What’s that from?” asked Bae.

“Kipling,” replied Hung. “It is a rough translation of a banned book. But

the banned books, ah yes, those are the best ones.”

“I’m learning to read,” said Lilly. “I’d like to read this Kipling.”

Hung laughed. “I think the works of Kipling are just a bit advanced for you.

There aren’t any pictures in them.”

“I’m reading the Bible,” replied Lilly. “There aren’t any pictures in it either.

I see the pictures in my head.”
